Walter J. Boxall was born in Southwark, London, in 1893, and attested for the Royal Sussex Regiment on 2 December 1914.
Posted initially to the 4th Battalion, he transferred to the 2nd Battalion and served with them during the Great War on the Western Front from 1 June 1915.
He was twice wounded by gun shot, to the left shoulder and the chest, on the first day of the Battle of Loos, 25 September 1915, on which date the Battalion was part of the first wave of attack, and was evacuated to England.
Recovering, he re-joined the battalion in France in July 1918, and was hospitalised with influenza on 27 January 1919. He was discharged to Class Z Reserve on 12 April 1919.
