Private Arthur Claxton was born in Salford and had previously served four years with the 8th Bn Lancashire Fusiliers, before enlisting into the King’s Own on the 18th August 1914. He was posted to the 6th Bn and landed in France on the 26th January 1915, In May 1915 he was wounded with a gunshot wound to the face and returned to the UK  in June 1915.

Recovering he re-joined his regiment in August 1915. He later served with the Labour Corps and was discharged with the award of the silver War Badge on the 31st January 1919.
