Born Blaris, Co. Down, Ireland in 1871. His trade a weaver and a part time member of the 5th battalion Royal Irish Rifles. He arrested to the 4th (Royal Irish) Dragoon Guards on 26.5.1890 age 19 years. He served in India from October 1894 to October 1897, transferring to the 3rd Dragoon Guards 2.2.1897. Served in South Africa 21.1.1901 to 25.8.1904. L.S. & G.C. 1908 and discharged 25.5.1911 after 21 years service. Residence Hillsborough, Co. Down. Re-enlisted 22.12.1914 did not serve abroad and was discharged to the reserve 13.2.1919 returning to Strandtown Belfast.
