Born Huddersfield, Yorks and entitled to a 2 clasp Q.S.A. Relief of Kimberley and Paardeberg. Claimed his discharge 8.8.1910 from permanent staff Yorkshire Dragoons at Bradford
Enlisted for the 6th (Carabiniers) Dragoon Guards, and saw active service with them as a Sergeant in South Africa during the Boer War. Promoted Squadron Sergeant Major, he was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal in October 1907, and his Meritorious Service Medal per Army Order 121 of 1943.
