Noel Mervyn Radcliffe-Smith was born 21st May 1882 and was first commissioned into the Lancashire Fusiliers in May 1901 and was appointed to the Indian Army 44th Merwara Infantry in June 1905. Captain 1910 and Major 1st September 1916. GSO Grade III 13th May 1916. GSO Grad II 25th August 1918 and again 1st April 1919. Brigade Major 5th April 1917.
M.C. LG 25.8.1917 ‘For distinguished service in the field in Mesopotamia’. Mentioned in Despatches LG 14.8.1917 (Mesopotamia).
1923 was with the 18th Royal Garhwal Rifles and acting Staff Officer Grade II at the Military Training Directorate, Indian Army. Lt Colonel Feb 1926 and Colonel May 1930. Assistant Adjutant General-Directorate of Organisation 1930-34. Commandant 8th (Bareilly) Infantry in 1924 as Temp. Brigadier. Retired May 1935 with the rank of Colonel.
