M.M. L.G. 23.2.1918. David Daniel Williams was born Pontardulais, Glamorgan, brother of Mrs Catherine Ann Hopkins of 16 Dantwyn Road, Pontardulais. He enlisted Swansea, entered theatre of war France 2.5.1915. He was K.I.A. France and Flanders 25 March 1918 during the opening days of the German Spring Offensive, when the beleaguered 5th Army was driven back across the old Somme battlefield by an overwhelming enemy assault over a wide front. He is commemorated on the Pozieres Memorial. Pte. Williams MM had been awarded the previous November for gallantry and devotion to duty near Passchendaele between 25th and 30th of that month whilst serving in ‘C’ Coy, 2nd Devon’s.
