Attested 18th May 1915 as an ordinary seaman, height 5’4″. Next of kin was his father John Butcher 104, St Johns Road, Balby, Doncaster. His religion Wesleyan and his occupation was a clerk. He was classed as an A.B. 18th August 1915. He was drafted from signal school to Plymouth on the 6th September 1915. He joined the 6th (Howe) Battalion R.N.D. on the 12th Jan 1918.
