Philip Henry Cannell was born at Braddon on the Isle of Man on 27 April 1882 and entered the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class in January 1900. A Petty Officer serving aboard the destroyer H.M.S. Ardent by the outbreak of hostilities in August 1914, he remained similarly employed until coming ashore in October 1915
He subsequently died at Douglas Asylum on 3 December 1915 and is buried at Kirk Braddan (St. Brendan) New Churchyard, Isle of Man; his next of kin received his L.S. & G.C. Medal in March 1920.
