George Bright was born on the Isle of Wight on 24 February 1845, and joined the Royal Navy as a Painter 2nd Class on 26 October 1870. Advanced Painter 1st Class on 1 July 1876, he was posted to H.M.S. Euryalus on 12 January 1882, serving with them in Egypt and the Sudan.

He was shore pensioned on 2 May 1888.
