James was born at Radcliff, Bristol and enlisted age 19 years, 6 months having previous service in the Somerset Militia.  He was  fortunately not present at Miawand but present at Kandahar, also being awarded Kabul to Kandahar Star.  Present in Egypt medal with clasp Nile 1884-5 and Khedive Star.  He transferred to the reserve and was discharged 02.10.1890 having served 12 years.

Re-enlisted in the Rifle Brigade 24.03.1915 and landed in Egypt 01.07.1916 to 17.09.1918.  India 01.10.1918 to 07.04.1919.  Discharged 30.05.1919 to UK. Entitled to a British War and Victory Medal No. 444 and 203767.
