William was born in Yeovil, Somerset and enlisted in the 2nd battalion Rifle Brigade 13.9.1870 at Weymouth age 18 years, 3 months, occupation a servant. Deserted at Birr on 6.6.1873. Joined the Gordons 19.6.1873, absent for two days.
Served in South Africa (Natal) 5.9.1873 to 10.3.1875. The rest of his service was at home where he married and had 7 children.
