Mark Brooks was born at Waterbeach, Cambridgeshire in 1835. Enlisting with the 73rd Foot on 27 November 1858 he transferred to the 1st Battalion, 19th Foot on 24 February 1861. Travelling with them to India he took part the Black Mountain Expedition against the Bazoti Tribes at Hazara in 1868 (India General Service Medal clasp North West Frontier, regimental number changed to 1385)
Posted to the 2nd Battalion on 1 January 1874 he then transferred back to the 73rd Foot on 1 September 1876. While serving with this regiment Brooks, discharged that same month on 17 December 1879, after 21 years and 20 days with the Colours; sold together with copied research including discharge, service and medical records.
