James was born in Watford Hertfordshire and enlisted 5.7.1844. He served overseas approximately 14 years and a total service of 21 years 28 days. The battle of Maiwand took place 27th July 1880 and who knows if Evans would have been present if not for his discharge only a few weeks earlier.
