James Riley was born in Burnley, Lancashire, and attested for the Royal Artillery at Liverpool, in January 1885. Having previously served in the 3rd battalion East Lancs but discharged. He served 3 years, 305 days in Burma and India with the 9th battery, 1 brigade northern division R.G.A. He was awarded the two clasps as listed, the clasp Sikkim is rare to the artillery the roll showing 25 clasps issued by A.G. He was discharged 25 July 1897, having served 12 years and Nelson was to be his place of residence.
