Born in about 1890 in Kilmore, Co. Mayo, and enlisted age 18 on his first entrance into the Army, Ensign 71st Regiment 6.10.1808, Lieutenant 14.6.1810, Captain 31.10.1822, Served in Canada June 1824 to 31st December 1829. Major william Long served the campaign from September 1813 to the end of the war including the following battles and affairs, viz: Cambo, Nive, before Bayonne (wounded) Orthes, Aire, Tarbes, Toulouse, and Waterloo.

Serve in the 1st battalion 71st Regiment under Lieutenant Colonel Thomas Reynolds at Waterloo. He died March 1860.

Major 10.1.1837 half pay 23.3.1838. Captain 9th Foot.
