TSAR’S CROSS FOR EXCELLENT BRAVERY REIGN OF TSAR ALEXANDER I FOUNDED ON JUNE 13, 1810. THE IMPERIAL CROSS FOR EXCELLENT COURAGE IN THE ASSAULT OF BAZARDJIK FORTRESS 1810, ISSUED BY TSAR ALEXANDER I AFTER THE CAPTURE OF BAZARDZHIK FROM THE TURKS THIS CROSS WAS AWARDED TO SOLDIERS WHO DISTINGUISHED THEMSELVES DURING THE ASSAULT ON THE TURKISH FORTRESS OF BAZARDZHIK, ON MAY 22, 1810. THE ASSAULT AND TAKING OF THE FORTRESS WAS A STRATEGIC RUSSIAN VICTORY IN THE RUSSO-TURKISH WAR OF 1806-1812. THE WAR TOOK PLACE DURING THE NAPOLEONIC WARS. WAR BROKE OUT IN 1806, WHEN NAPOLEON, TOOK CONTROL OF DALMATIA AND CONVINCED THE OTTOMAN SULTAN TO OUST THE PRO-RUSSIAN RULERS OF THE TURKISH VASSAL STATES OF WALLACHIA AND MOLDAVIA. THE RUSSIANS, TO SHORE UP THEIR BORDERS AGAINST THEIR ENEMIES, MOVED INTO WALLACHIA AND MOLDAVIA. THE OTTOMANS BLOCKED THE RUSSIAN FLEET AT THE DARDANELLES AND DECLARED WAR. THERE WAS A SHORT RESPITE IN 1807, AFTER THE SIGNING OF THE PEACE OF TILSIT, BUT HOSTILITIES RENEWED IN 1810. BAZARDZHIK,OR PAZARDZHIK, A CITY IN WHAT IS NOW SOUTHERN BULGARIA, WAS ATTACKED AND CAPTURED BY THE RUSSIAN BROTHERS GENERALS, COUNTS NIKOLAY AND SERGEI KAMENSKY.
