Six service companies of the regiment embarked at Cork for The Cape in October 1845, but they were diverted to South America where they saw action against the Argentinians at Montevideo before reaching The Cape. Their transport Apollo was nearly wrecked during a storm. They took part in various skirmishes guarding supply trains and forts etc. It is believed that Samuel died 11.9.1858.whilst serving in the Indian Mutiny and that he received a no clasp Mutiny medal.
