South Africa Medal 1834-1853 Third Kaffir War. Colour Sergeant J. Johnson, 2nd Bn. 60th Rifles GVF
Born in Newton Manchester and enlisted age 17 years 2 months. Saw service in the Cape of 7 years 1 month taking part in the 3rd Kaffir wars of 1851-2-and 3. He next served in India for 4 years and took part in the 2nd China War earning the medal with two clasps Taku Forts 1860 and Pekin 1860. He was awarded the Long Service medal and took his discharge 24.5.1870 his home to be Portsmouth.
