Thomas Friend was born at Peasmarch, Sussex, and enlisted on 1 June 1803, aged 22, for unlimited service. He was discharged on 30 April 1818, to pension, as a result of a reduction in the regiment and completion of his second period of service. His correct name was Friend and not Freind as shown on his medal. An M.G.S. was issued to this man for service in the Peninsula Wars for the battle of Salamanca 22nd July 1812 whilst serving with ‘C’ troop
