Herbert was born in Hull and enlisted age 20 years, 1 month trade a journalist. He served in South Africa his medals earned there confirmed.

He re-enlisted 11.4.1913 to 4.10.1914 then joined the Expeditionary Force 1.11.1914 France.  The roll shows entitled to the 1914-star trio. Listed in the Jewry book of Honour, discharged 14.4.1916.
