He attested for the Middlesex Regiment and served with the 7th Battalion during the Great War on the Western Front. He was awarded the Military Medal for his gallantry at the Battles of Albert, 21-24 August 1918, and the Scarpe, 26-30 August 1918 (The History of the 7th Middlesex by E. J. King).
